WHO WE ARE

Newark Arts Council doesn't just support the arts — we power them.

Founded in 1981 as an independent 501(c)(3), Newark Arts Council connects artists to funding, corporations to cultural expertise, and communities to transformative experiences. For more than four decades, we've built the infrastructure that helps Newark's creative economy thrive.

Impact

Every program, grant, and partnership we facilitate creates measurable change — for individual artists, for neighborhoods, and for the creative economy as a whole. In 2020, the City of Newark entrusted us to develop its Community Cultural Plan, Newark Creates. Through the resulting Creative Catalyst Fund, we distributed $2.35 million to 402 artists and small arts organizations over three years. Here's a snapshot of what our ongoing work looks like.

Newark Arts Council believes that arts education is the foundation of a thriving creative community. Through our dedicated partnership with Arts Ed Newark, a collective impact alliance of over 80 partner organizations, we partner with schools, community organizations, and teaching artists to bring high-quality arts programming to young people across the city — from in-school residencies and afterschool workshops to summer intensives and professional development for educators.

Newark Creates

Newark Creates, A Community Cultural Plan for the City of Newark

Newark Creates is a collaborative plan, powered by Newark Arts on behalf of the City. It is an organized initiative of community members, nonprofit, for profit, and governmental stakeholders working together to advance an equitable foundation for both communities within Newark and the Community of Newark to thrive with arts and culture. The outcomes of the Plan will support the civic, social, and economic growth of the City of Newark and will advance new developments in the creation, production, and availability of arts and culture in the city.
