Create work that cares for your community 

ArtStart is Newark Arts’ annual grant program supporting artists and organizations shaping Newark’s cultural landscape.

For 2026–27, we are prioritizing Arts and Wellness — funding projects that use creative expression to support mental health, cultural healing, and meaningful community connection.

Since its inception, ArtStart has funded hundreds of projects across Newark, investing directly in artists and neighborhoods.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR 

Projects may include: 

  • Arts-based approaches to mental, emotional, or spiritual wellness 
  • Community healing, storytelling, or intergenerational work 
  • Movement-based or somatic practices 
  • Visual, literary, or performing arts centered on self-expression 
  • Work addressing grief, trauma, stress, or isolation 
  • Public art or creative activations that promote joy and belonging 

WHO SHOULD APPLY 

Newark-based: 

  • Artists 
  • Collectives 
  • Nonprofits 
  • Schools and community groups 

Priority for projects serving youth, elders, and underserved communities.
