About ArtStart Grants
Since 2001, the ArtStart Grant Program has been a catalyst for cultural activity in the local Newark arts community. The program offers mini-grants to community members, schools, non-profits and individual artists with the aim of nurturing a broad spectrum of arts and cultural activities involving young people and/or taking place in our neighborhoods. By seeding these innovative programs, Newark Arts continues to fulfill its mission of powering the arts in locations that are often overlooked by traditional programs, and stimulating economic and cultural activity on a hyper-local level.
A selection committee representing a broad spectrum of the community considers all proposals. Since its inception, Newark Arts has made over 200 grant awards ranging from $500 to $5,000, and totaling over $1,000,000!
Applications for ArtStart Grants 2026-27 are now CLOSED.
ARTSTART GRANTS 2026-27
Arts & Wellness / $5000 for Newark Artists & Organizations
Create work that cares for your community
ArtStart is Newark Arts’ annual grant program supporting artists and organizations shaping Newark’s cultural landscape.
For 2026–27, we are prioritizing Arts and Wellness — funding projects that use creative expression to support mental health, cultural healing, and meaningful community connection.
Since its inception, ArtStart has funded hundreds of projects across Newark, investing directly in artists and neighborhoods.
“This year’s focus on arts and wellness is deeply intentional. Artists are already holding space for healing and connection across our communities. ArtStart allows us to invest directly in that work and strengthen Newark through creativity and care.”
