The Solo(s) Project House
post date: February 17, 2010

The Solo(s) Project House is a project space dedicated to showcasing and
elevating creative individuals or groups that produce as one. It acts as a
"house" for artists providing unique studio space and a creative atmosphere,
where artist can interact and produce art. These studios surround a communal
area that will soon be occupied by solo exhibitions. At one time, there can
be up to ten entities working simultaneously. The space has been created
with the individual artist in mind, fostering and nurturing their physical
and conceptual processes. The atmosphere will act as the inspiration and
drive for artists to bring their work to the next level.

The Solo(s) Project House is a vision of Rebecca Jampol, a local artist and
co-founder of the now closed Jajo Gallery of Newark, NJ. The space was
graciously provided by Sunrise Newark Development, with the assistance of
Square Foot LLC. Currently the space is occupied by five artists: Marc
D’Augusto, Ninapilar Daniels, Rebecca Jampol, Josh Knoblick and Terina
McKinney.

The Solo(s) Project House will open to the public March 19, 2010.

Sumei Multidisciplinary Arts Center Moves
post date: January 21, 2010

In 2006, Sumei Multidisciplinary Arts Center was moved in order for the City of Newark to build the Prudential Sports Arena. On Wednesday Oct., 21, 2009, it reopened its doors after a three year hiatus. Sumei Arts Center was founded in 1993 by a collective of musicians, architects, poets, graphic designers, visual and fine artists interested in broadening their reach within the local Newark, New Jersey area and beyond. Known for its unusual and outstanding programs of national and international exhibits, workshops for children and adults, lectures, cultural education, artist workshops, presentations, and programs of music from many different cultures, Sumei Arts represents all that makes up our diverse country. In its new location, the organization plans to link the Newark arts community to the global art community in its quest for a new future for art.

Photographic Books and Prints from the Special Collections of the Newark Public Library, curated by Jared Ash
post date: January 11, 2010

Long before many other museums and art institutions in the United States, the Newark Public Library accepted and promoted photography as a fine art form rather than merely a mechanical means of documentation and reproduction. Since 1911, when the Library hosted Modern Pictorial Photography, an exhibition organized by the Newark Museum Association featuring works by Clarence H. White, Gertrude Käsebier, and Alvin Langdon Coburn, among others, the Newark Public Library has actively exhibited and acquired photographic books, journals, and original photographs.

The Library's collection of photographic literature spans from the late nineteenth century to the present day, and includes some of the most iconographic and seminal "photo-books" of our time.

Among the highlights of the Library's collections on view in the exhibition are select issues of Camera Work (a photography journal published and directed by Alfred Stieglitz from 1903 through 1917 that features original photogravure prints by Stieglitz and Edward Steichen, among others); Man Ray: Photographs 1920-1934, Paris by Man Ray; Photographs of Mexico, a portfolio of 20 photogravures by Paul Strand, published in 1940; and original photographs and photo-books by Diane Arbus, Margaret Bourke-White, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Roy DeCarava, Elliott Erwitt, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Edwin Hale Lincoln, Gordon Parks, Man Ray, Sebastião Salgado, and Weegee, among others.

For more information about the exhibit, please call the Special Collections Division at 973-733-7745, or e-mail Jared Ash at jash@npl.org.
