ABOUT US
The Newark Arts Council was created to advance and expand the artistic and cultural resources of the City of Newark, New Jersey. The agency provides leadership, direction, and technical assistance through partnerships with Newark's many artists, arts administrators, community organizations, community development corporations, planning groups, economic development agencies, and the general public.
Our goal is to share resources, promote advocacy efforts, assist in audience development and public awareness of arts and culture, and to serve as a cultural resource to the community. The mission of the Newark Arts Council is to bring the transformative power of the arts into the lives of those who live in, work in, and visit Newark through programs, advocacy, promotion, education, and coordination.
POSITION AVAILABLE
The Newark Arts Council is seeking a highly motivated intern to assist with arts education research endeavors. Duties will include, but are not limited to, organizing existing resource materials and evaluating new resource materials pertinent to arts education initiatives, streamlining their availability and preparing them as directed by the Arts Education Program Director. Internet research and strong computer skills required. The ideal candidate will either possess or be working toward a degree in non-profit or arts administration, arts education, or urban education in addition to being able to work independently and alongside the Arts Education Program Director. The Arts Education Intern will be responsible for specific tasks as they pertain to Newark Arts Council arts education research initiatives. The duration of this position is 3-4 months (February-May). The position is part time, 2 days a week, 2-3 hours per day.
REQUIREMENTS
Include but are not limited to:
- Excellent written, verbal, research and computer skills
- Proper phone manner and professional demeanor
- Ability to work cooperatively and independently in a small office setting
- Familiarity with Newark schools and local arts community a plus
The position is an unpaid internship but the Newark Arts Council is wiling to coordinate for school credit.

Arts to Grow is a not-for-profit organization that serves students in after school time programs specifically in the arts.
We are searching for a multimedia visual arts teaching artist for a studio-based program: “Seeing the World Through Digital Media”. The program will serve 20+ students ages 7-9 and focus on learning basic techniques of photography and videography to be used as an outlet for telling students personal narratives.
The program partner is the Academy Street Firehouse the first single location in New Jersey to address the specific educational, social, and medical needs of children and adolescents who are dealing with the loss of a parent/family member due to AIDS.
The project will take place from March – June 2012 during 12 weeks of once weekly 1.5-hour sessions. The project will conclude with a public showing at the Firehouse’s 1st floor theater (75 person capacity).

The Newark Arts Council is seeking a highly motivated intern to assist with social media marketing endeavors and general administrative responsibilities. Duties will include but are not limited to maintenance of the NAC Facebook and Twitter pages, the creation of an Arts Council blog, development of a strategy for social media connectivity and outreach, light record-keeping and data entry, image archiving, and day to day office tasks.
