Proposal Summary: Program workshops impart buildable skill sets associates
with specific art making techniques, including cyanotype photography, digital
animation and basic sculptural carpentry. By providing access to arts and media
training, one-on-one assistance, materials, space and lunch, and by recruiting in
and out of school in each of Newark’s wards, we lower the barriers to participation
for students.

Name of Proposed Project: Then & Now: A Creative Aging Visual Arts Project

Proposal Summary: Then and Now: A Creative Aging Visual Arts project will
allow twenty-five (25) seniors to participate in a 17 week visual arts class at the
Ironbound Senior Center in Newark, NJ. The project will culminate with an
exhibition of their work, a reception and catalog. The participants will learn about
famous portraiture artists such as Frida Kahlo, Rembrandt, Vincent Van Gogh,
Leonardo da Vinci, Andy Warhol and others to explore tow separate portraits; a
self portrait of who they are “now” and another portrait of “who they were” in their
20’s, 30’s and 40’s, etc.

Name of Proposed Project: My Newark: A Wheelchair-eye View of the City

Proposal Summary: The students at John F. Kennedy (JFK) are physically
disabled and ages 1—21. This proposed project would enable them to use the
medium of photography to capture their perspective of their lives in their school
and community.

Name of Proposed Project: educating students about AIDS through Art

Proposal Summary: the mission of the AIDS Museum is to education people
about HIV through art. The goals of this program are to serve 525 students and
to improve knowledge and feelings about HIV and AIDS, and to institutionalize
an arts-based approach to HIV education. Students in health and/or art classes at
three high schools will visit an exhibit of art relates to AIDS at their school. They
will participate in a discussion with an artist living with HIV or whose work deals
with the topic. Students will then create their own projects based on their feelings
about AIDS. Finally, the students will present their art projects to their classmates.

Name of Proposed Project: Animodules Creation with Technology HS

Proposal Summary: An artist in residence will be employs, working with
technology High School, with art teacher Dorie Dahlberg. The program will
involve approximately 100 students. Animodiule creation and participation in the
Newark Arts Parade provides extraordinary opportunities for artistic collaboration
and self-expression , while uniting the city’s youth with the greater Newark
community. Animodule creation answers NJ CCCS for the Visual and Performing
Arts, in particular fostering students’ ability to define and solve artistic problems
with insight, reason, and technical proficiency.

Name of Proposed Project: 2011 Wofabe: African dance and Drum Festival

Proposal Summary: Umoja dance Company proposes to present the sixth annual
Wofabe: African Dance and Drum Festival in November of 2011. The festival
examines traditional African dance, how traditions have evolved and how they
have been reinterpreted by contemporary artists. There will be panel discussions
on African dance and drumming with workshops/ classes in the dances from
Guinea and Senegal and drumming and workshop/classes in djembe and djun djun
drums, both of which are prominently used in African dance and music.

Name of Proposed Project: Heal, Ink!

Proposal Summary: The true Colors Project of LIT Social Justice Center
provides a safe space for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and
Questioning (LGBTIQ) youth and young adults and their allies. Many queer youth
are gifted artists and not necessarily able to succeed socially in school or in their
neighborhoods, our youth tend to use art as an outlet for expression. The “Heal,
Ink!” component of the True Colors Project will provide a space for young people
to release stress, tell their stories, write poetry and engage with local visiting
artists. Twice a year, youth participants will have an opportunity to perform their
written work for an audience of their peers in a performance/exhibit space called
Verbal Liberation.

Name of Proposed Project: Live Your Life

Proposal Summary: theater is a powerful tool for behavioral and social change,
it can be used to raise awareness, it engages and connects the actors and the
audience and uses voice, speech, language and movement to bring life to human
reality. “Live Your Life” will use exercises, theater games, techniques and the
creative process to teach participants the theatrical elements o character and plot
development to help reflect the social experiences of urban youth. This workshop
will allow the students to discover and respond emotively through introspection
and imagination using drama to engage audiences. Students will also attend a
Broadway production that deals with socially relevant issues.

Name of Proposed Project: Academy Street Firehouse Youth Program

Proposal Summary: The Academy Street Firehouse is an after-school program
specifically designed to meet the =needs of at-risk children impacted by HIV?
AIDS. for the 2011-12 school year, the Firehouse would like to broaden activities
offered and strengthen its work with youth through the addition of a performance-
based arts workshop. The firehouse would like to engage in a collaboration with
Yendor Productions, an organization that has designed and provided high-quality
arts programming to Newark’s youth since 2003. The proposed collaboration
would include a 12-week Acting and Writing Class for 15 students, culminating in
a performance showcase at the Academy Street Firehouse theater. The opportunity
would be a significant addition to the richness of the after-school program, and
bring a hands-on arts education experience to a unique Newark community.

Name of Proposed Project: Rogue Video and Performance (RV&P)

Proposal Summary: RV&P seeks funding for outdoor video screenings and
performances to take place during Newark Open Doors in fall 2011. The video
and performance events augment existing exhibitions by expanding the presence
of the arts in an alternative and palpable environment that reaches core and non-
traditional audiences. This strategy engages new and/or uninitiated visitors by
bringing art to public spheres outside of the traditional audience base that is
destination-oriented. RV&P connects arts to the public that may not be aware of
Open Doors or that might not otherwise engage with the arts. This democratizes
art viewing by engaging people in an environment that is more inclusive, while
connecting to audiences outside of the usual visitor base. It also provides additional
opportunities for artists to present their work and for budding arts professionals to
hone their skills. Project includes Newark artists as well as artists from the New
York Metro area and an international pool of artists.

Name of Proposed Project: A.W.E. Inspiring Camp (Arts and Wellness and Experience)

Proposal Summary: Creative Heartwork, Inc., will enroll 20 HIV infected and/
or affected children in an arts and wellness one week day camp in partnership
with the Peter Ho Memorial Clinic of St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark. Teaching
artists and art therapists will engage the children in art, music, dance, and drama
activities that promote mind, body and spirit wellness, enhance self esteem and
social skill development, instill an appreciation for the arts as a tool for coping
and healing and restoring childhood joy and exuberance. Program fosters an
understanding of creative process, helps develop skills for real world situations
through development of problem solving skills, higher ordered thinking; meets life
science, comprehensive health and phys ed, and social and emotional health goals
set forth in NJCCS.

Name of Proposed Project: Music Speaks – A Celebration of James Moody and
the Music of African Americans
Artistic Discipline: Multi-Disciplinary

Proposal Summary: A free exhibition, lecture, and performance series designed
to increase Newark citizens’ appreciation for the African American musical genre
as they pertain to gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and hip hop. The
goal of the four part series will be to educate and capture local residents, college
students, as well as commuters from the greater Newark area. Each panel will
focus on a singular musical genre, and will feature musicians, artists, critics, and
musicologists. Guest curator to be Amiri Baraka.
