| Walter Rodriguez: Artist Statement
Walter Rodriguez is a long time resident of Union City currently serving as an educator at Newmark High School in Carteret, NJ. He describes his visual work as evolutionary and as such his art manifests itself in a variety of forms leaving visible evidence of its ongoing stylistic trajectory. In contrast to visual style, Rodriguez puts an emphasis on theme and symbolism employed as a constant element throughout his art. His body of work introduces pieces that offer to serve as the center piece to an open honest debate about matters that demand immediate attention in our world. On the other hand, also included in his work are pieces that celebrate the simplicities of life. Rodriguez’s innate passion for the visual arts earned him a degree at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia from where he graduated in 2002 with a bachelor in fine arts. Past exhibits include the Multi Arts Festival (1998) & (2005). Additionally, he was the third place recipient at the Ely exhibit in Philadelphia (2002). Along with painting, Rodriguez has also been a featured poet at local poetry nights and has recently published a poem with Blue Unicorn, a prestigious literary journal from California. Having had his first official exhibit of four large drawings at age twelve, as an experienced painter Rodriguez is now displaying his highest level of technical maturity without dimming the vigor that has identified his work for so long.
