Victor Alfonso:

Photographing abandoned or condemned buildings in a beautiful and captivating way. Often overlooked these structures are great subjects. Like the face of an old sailor, weathered by the sun, wind, and hard times. These structures, once vacations resorts, or lucrative factories, no longer employ or entertain people. They themselves have fallen into hard times.

These structures too have been weathered by the elements. The wind, the sun and the ever-growing weeds have not reclaimed them to the earth yet. What the elements have done is expose the multiple layers of paint and the rust that give these places character despite their sad state. Just like the old sailor these places still have a story to tell. His photography is a way for these building to still have a voice.

Victor Afonso was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and he immigrated to the United States in 1990 along with his family. He is the proud product of the Newark Public Schools, and graduated from Rutgers University in Newark with a bachelor in Fine Arts. He currently works as an art teacher at East Side High School in Newark.
