Serron:

Artist Statement
Born and raised in Newark,NJ, I was heavily exposed to the Black Power movement of the seventies, and the explosion of graffiti in the eighties – two elements that have a major influence on my current work.

Having no formal training, I began experimenting with graffiti during the eighties and nineties. During this time, I branched off and began using a variety of medium including house paint, watercolor, chalk, charcoal, and most importantly, spray paint. However, after a fourteen-year hiatus, I began painting on canvas in 2007.

Most of my inspiration comes from the facial expressions and head movements I observe in people of color, whose faces usually have sharp lines and bold features. In a word, “I am a people watcher.”

Through painting, my goal is to evoke in others what I feel at a given moment; whether it’s observing a person’s demeanor or reflecting on a certain event.
